George Ward Tjungurrayi was born c. 1947 "in the bush" in Pintupi country across the WA border.  George or Wakanintja by his indigenous name is married to Nyungawarra Ward Napurrula and is the father of artist Gracie Ward Napaltjarri.  George is half brother to other famous artists, Willy Tjungurrayi and Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi (now deceased).

Trucked in to Papunya in the 60s by Jeremy Long's Welfare Branch patrols, he lived in Warburton, Wiluna and Jigalong before returning to Pintupi country and the settlement of Kintore arcross the NT border.
 
George began painting in West Camp in Papunya about 1976 for Papunya Tula Artists, the same time as his older brother Willy Tjungurrayi, and continued painting while residing at Yai Yai, Warawa, Mt. Leibig and now Kintore.  His ancestral country covers the sites around Wala Wala, Kiwirrkura, Lake Mackay, Kulkuta, Karku, Ngaluwinyamana and Kilpinya to the northwe   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 2541 characters.]  Artist bio
